Use Of Indirect Message And Contrast In Poetry Essays - Rhyme

Use of Indirect Message and Contrast in Poetry Poets must utilize many tools and techniques to create a mood or convey a thought. Metaphor, simile, spacing, form, voice, and setting are all common poetic utilities. Some tools, however, are more understated. Some of the more delicate methods used by poets are rhythm, language, and the consistency of the theme throughout the poem. One work that makes use of inconsistent theme is Edna St. Vincent Millay's sonnet "Love Is Not All: It Is Not Meat nor Drink" (page 936). This poem uses indirect theme and abrupt change in message to add more emphasis the meaning of the poem. By beginning the poem with an image that contrasts the main theme, the poet is able to inflict a more vivid impression on the reader. Even the title of Millay's sonnet gives us an idea of what the poem's theme is likely to be. "Love is not all" suggests that the persona is decrying love. It prepares the reader for a put-down of love and all things romantic. Millay proceeds to use a group of anti-similes that declare what love is not; "it is not meat nor drink," therefor we presumably can not live without it. Love will not refresh you or protect you from the elements, as it is not "slumber nor a roof against the rain." She then relates love to "a floating spar to men that sink," stating that it will not support you in times of disaster. The entire first six lines generally knock love by declaring it useless and unsubstantial. After reading this the reader jumps to the conclusion that they know what Millay's message is. The turning point of the poem is the seventh line. "Yet many a man is making friends with death / Even as I speak, for lack of love alone" contradicts everything the reader is led to believe thus far. The following lines are equally contrary to the initial message. They state that though love may not be absolutely necessary, life is hardly worth living without it. The persona states that though in a time of "nagging by want past resolution's power" she could trade her lover's affection for a moment of relief, she doubts that she would. This change of message is one of the more delicate and indirect tools used to drive a point home to the reader. If we simply read the last sestet of the poem, the message seems trivial and mundane. The persona wouldn't trade her love for anything. So what. It has no emphasis, and lacks voice. The reader is left with no lasting impression. However, when read with the first octet included, the poem takes on a new importance. The sudden contrast in mood and theme catches the reader's attention. Contrast is used in all forms of art and imagery. Visual artists use contrasting colors and light and dark to make an image more independent and defined. When held to a dark backdrop, a white object appears much more vivid than it would against a light backdrop. A soft melody proceeding a loud crescendo is often used by musicians to make the latter even more impressive and overwhelming. Millay's use of contrast in this poem punctuates the message in a similar manner. The last line jumps upon the reader with emphasis. To create this emphasis, she employs inconsistent line structure and rhyme scheme in addition to the theme change. Throughout the sonnet, the lines are long and full of many-syllable words. The final line, however, is very simple. It contains single syllable words, and uses no figurative language. "It well may be. I do not think I would" simply states the message. The prolific use of figurative speech earlier in the sonnet to state the opposing thought makes this line more memorable and powerful. This line does not fit into the rhyme scheme of the sonnet, either. Lines one through twelve follow the standard scheme of abab. Lines thirteen and fourteen, however, don't rhyme. Millay breaks away from the rest of the poem, giving the last lines independence. These techniques combine with the change in message to embed the theme deep into the reader's mind. Contrast is a very effective tool in poetry. Just

Anthem essays The True Importance of Individuality Ayn Rands Anthem truthfully explores a consolidated collectivist society from which a man struggles to discover a way to escape the evasion and lies of this totalitarian government, while simultaneously trying to find the meaning of his own life as an individual, not as a group. (pg. 95) Equality 7-2521 begins to fully realize his importance as an individual after discovering the word I as a means to decipher one another through an ancient book that he recovers. Neither am I the means to any end others may wish to accomplish. I am not a tool for their use, servant of their needs, a sacrifice on their altars. Synthesis and Characterization of K2[Ni(CN)4] , K3[Fe(C2O4)3] and Cu(acac)2 Complexes :: Lab Report

Synthesis and Characterization of K2[Ni(CN)4] , K3[Fe(C2O4)3] and Cu(acac)2 complexes(IV , V and VI) with different structures and Properties 1. Introduction The aim of this experiment was to synthesize HgCo(SCN)4 , [Ni(en)3]S2O3 , NiCl2(PPh3)2 , K2[Ni(CN)4] , K3[Fe(C2O4)3] and Cu(acac)2 but only K2[Ni(CN)4] , K3[Fe(C2O4)3] and Cu(acac)2 were synthesized and explained in this report. Characterization was then done on each of the 3 synthesized complexes by obtaining their UV-Vis spectrum. The UV-Vis spectrum of each complex would identify different properties and would help to explain the observations made when they were synthesized (for example their colour and how they reacted). 2. Method Table 1: Synthesis of K2[Ni(CN)4] Amount of Reagents used Method Observations NiSO4 †¢ 7H2O : 6.00 g KCN : 3.01g In 20ml water NiSO4 †¢ 7H2O was dissolved and the solution containing KCN (dissolved in 7ml water) was added to the Nickel solution. This solution was filtered and the precipitate was washed with small quantities of water. This precipitate was added to the solution of KCN (dissolved in 3ml of water). This solution was heated and swirled so that the crystals that formed dissolved. It was heated again and left so that crystals started forming again. This solution was then placed in an ice bath to enhance crystallization and the crystals were removed by filtration. The water was removed by drying the crystals in the oven at 100 °C. A small amount of the sample was dissolved in water and the UV-Vis spectrum was obtained. Nickel (II) sulphate hexahydrate was used in place of heptahydrate. When the precipitate was added to the KCN solution, it turned dark red. As it was heated it darkened even more but as the crystals started forming the colour changed to a light red. As the crystals dried more its colour changed from light red-orange to a light yellow colour. These crystals were dissolved in water for the UV-vis spectrum. The solution was a yellow colour. Table 2: Synthesis of K3[Fe(C2O4)3] Amount of Reagents used Method Observations (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2 †¢ 6H2O: 5.03g To a solution of (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2 †¢ 6H2O (dissolved in 20ml water) 1 ml of sulphuric acid was added and stirred. The oxalic acid (dissolved in 25ml water) was also added and this combined solution was slowly heated to boiling, resulting in the formation of yellow iron(II) oxalate precipitate. The liquid was decanted and 15ml of hot water was added again to the precipitate, this was stirred and filtered. The precipitate (iron(II) oxalate) was transferred to another beaker and a potassium oxalate solution (dissolved in 10ml hot water) was added.

C.S. Lewis: “We have No ‘Right to Happiness” Essay

In the essay C.S. Lewis claims that we the people within the world don’t have the right to happiness. Now why would he believe that we don’t? Surely, we have met people in our life’s here and there who we thought were either happy or not. But does that mean in Lewis’ essay that since â€Å"We have no right to happiness† that everyone in the world is miserable? Its ironic how nothing has changed in our culture since the time Lewis has wrote this short essay. I believe that people know how to be happy but they just feel like they â€Å"supposedly† have a good reason to not be satisfied with their lives. Society today makes â€Å"us† brainwashed thinking that we don’t have many rights to do certain things within our lives with all the music, media, and etc. When in reality we do have the right to make a stand and have our happiness be handed to. No one is to be felt like they can’t be happy because I strongly disagree on Lew is’ part for his title in the essay â€Å"We have no right to happiness† because I know that based on people’s life can be found happiness in many ways whether they find happiness in life, being rich, or love. Firstly, it just amusing that people misconstrue themselves thinking that they have the right to do whatever makes them feel happy. Even though, in the â€Å"Declaration of Independence† states that we are all equal and have rights to do what makes us happy, but to be honest it’s just all lies. For instance, in school our opinions in class shouldn’t affect our grades. That just shows you how the world just wants you to feel unhappy and that you have no right to speak up your mind. In reality, we truly don’t have equalizes in our own country which I feel it’s a shame because why doesn’t the world not want us to be happy? What we should have is balance in life in order to know what we know will make us happy. The major misunderstanding we the people have is thinking that we can steal, rape, murder people, and etc. Why? Because supposedly we can do whatever that makes us happy, despite the consequences? I feel like there should be limits when we talk about what can make us happy like doing the better deed instead of doing the bad deed that  isn’t the right to happiness. We have to remember good deed brings good karma within in yourself and you will be earned the happiness you deserve. Secondly, I find it really unfair how there are millionaires/celebrities who have all the money in the world and still aren’t †Å"happy† with themselves. Personally, if I were them I would be running around with joy in my big beautiful mansion that I bought. I mean if they deserved to be rich with so much money why not be happy? Therefore, you see celebrities overdosing themselves, and drinking till they can’t any more because they aren’t happy. For example, Brittany Murphy she died from an overdose with of course drug pills why? Honestly, we should all be grateful in the world that we have some sort of happiness to keep us alive because without it we’ll all be weak. In addition, for the people who drink away their problems does it help? Yes, when you’re drunk, but once you’re sober again the issue will always be there. Thus, we should always think twice before we act on whatever we’re doing. In reality, I truly believe that the rich are more depressed then the people who aren’t rich. Reason being, because they know what it is to be thankful and blessed no matter how richer or poorer. Lastly, when I read that in Lewis essay Mr. B wants to divorce his wife because he doesn’t find her sexual attractive anymore. This topic I put to last because it’s the number one topic that truly gets me crazy because I know men out there that actually do that to their dearest wives. Now, when it comes to happiness I always do believe in â€Å"second chance†. Why couldn’t Mr. B tell his wife â€Å"Oh, honey lately you haven’t seem to care about yourself why don’t you treat yourself to the spa or get your hair done†. I mean is it that hard to be honest with your love partner? That’s only if you believe in giving â€Å"love† one more try and know that you still love him/her and would do anything to make it work. Therefore, that’s why there are a lot of divorces in America sadly to say. Couples forget the reason why they fell in love with each other from the very start and how great they used to communicate together as a strong loving married couple. It’s obvious that Mr. B was only caring about himself and not his wife. What I do know and I don’t want to sound like Im a know-it-all but because I have family members/friends who’s had that situation before getting divorce for so many reasons; that when two people have long lasting happiness it’s not because they are exclusive but because they trust each other and also have loyalty,  control over themselves, fair-minded, and etc. Even though Lewis obtainable made Mr. B and his mistress bad in his ess ay saying that others should be happy by â€Å"divorcing†. Overall, as what Lewis’ wanted to make his readers point out that the word â€Å"happiness† is a process of what we can achieve only when our interests aren’t based on ourselves but others too. His title of the essay is just like a question; â€Å"Do you believe we have no right to happiness?† It’s a message that Lewis’ sends out to his readers like what do we believe that if we should have the right to be happy. Obviously, we all do have the right no one should feel neglected. Sadly, to say that there are still people today those â€Å"think† they are powerless and can’t achieve anything. But I do strongly disagree on Lewis’ part for his title in the essay â€Å"We have no right to happiness† because I know that based on people’s life can be found happiness in many ways whether they find happiness in life, being rich, or love. Therefore, this topic is very fun and interesting to write about because everyone has their own opinions whether they believe or not that we should have the right to happiness it’s a very good argument.
